The Kreutzer Sonata and Other Stories By Graf Leo Tolstoy

The Kreutzer Sonata and Other Stories Graf Leo Tolstoy 9781544939094 Books

In this avant grade novella, Tolstoy rants against marriage as it existed in late 19th century in Russia. His diatribe is applicable--in some marriages--in other countries and other times, including the U.S. at present. Contrary to some critics, I did not find it sexist. Men even more than women take the blame for extramarital affairs and other misdeeds. Men do not come across, at least to this reader, as intellectually superior to women.

The story is told by a man who can't tolerate his wife to strangers on a train. His diatribe seems to go on forever (that's why only four stars), although there's usually a new twist. I won't reveal the ending.

Classic
How can a story written so long ago be so relevant? How is it Tolstoy understood the dilemma of women so well. Tolstoy crawled into the skin of a very despicable. troubled man who could not change (yes, he is symbolic) and fleshed him out for readers. You will find yourself arguing with the narrator.
These stories have a deeply Christian outlook with the underlying message of repaying evil with good, and a reminder that God takes care of his own, provided we walk in His ways.
Tolstoy expresses somewhat fanatical religious and anti-sex views in "The Kreutzer Sonata". Nevertheless, as always his enormous emotional power and psychological perception as an artist supersede the didacticism and make the book a fascinating read. The book is surprising for its frankness in the high Victorian era--no wonder it was banned.
It's a great story. The idea of having Russian and English next to each other on the page is a good one. The problem with this edition is that the English translation is bad. My Russian skills are pretty good, but I purchased this for the few phrases that turn up now and then that I do not understand. The English translation does not follow the Russian except in a very basic way. The plot and characters are the same. Some sentences are well translated. Other sentences are left out entirely in the English version. Or, worse, are replaced with something that isn't in the Russian version at all.

If you're getting this as an aide to learning Russian, don't do it. Just Kreutzer Sonata and a dictionary will serve you better.
Make no mistake, I love the book, but this translation is total rubbish. It completely alters the source material in ways that make ZERO sense. This isn't a word to word thing either; the structures of paragraphs are altered at the translators whim. I would say this is abridged edition of Kreutzer's Sonata, were it not for the fact that the changes made during translation make Tolstoy's points even less clear. The only plus is that it is free. If you are reading this for a class or for any other serious reasons, buy a real translation. You owe it to both yourself and Tolstoy.
Read Second Person Singular by Sayed Kashua in ref. to Kreutzer. Read also Sophia Tolstoy's revenge. It is not possible to otherwise criticize a story the very subject and title of which have made it into the literature of modern psychology. It is not major Tolstoy but it is required reading for anyone who seeks to understand human possibilities. In general, however, Tolstoy needs the length and discursiveness of the novel. If stories are your thing read Chekhov.
